Introducing "The Function"

The Function is inspired by the design concepts used by Daniel Thomson in his Modern Planing Hulls mashed up with elements from my Standard Deviation and Variant models. This is a small to average wave board designed to maximize drive, speed, and lift, while minimizing excess. In average waves where hold is not an issue we can widen the tail for increased drive and speed. We can remove the pointed noses used to prevent pearling on a steep face. We are left with only the functional elements of the surfboard.

Cole Slutzky stopped by the other day to take some pictures and video of me shaping. Cole is filming a surf movie called "Preconceived Noceans" that focuses on the North East and Great Lakes regions and their surfing cultures. I'm stoked to see how his vision translates into the final product.

"Rode this one for the first time this AM in waist-chest high mush with a few meatier peaks/sections from time to time. I swore I was only going to go and catch a dozen waves before work and wound up having to take a half-day and walked in during lunch break. Stupid fun. Catches waves easily, super fast, so easy to beat sections, comes off the top well for such a wide board, so easy to do long connecting floaters and even pop airs and even do rotations. Definitely a small-wave slayer and a longboard killer."

Adding a little color to a new DTX (Diamond Tail X). This will be glassed in Resin-X and available for sale, $550.

DTX - Diamond Tail Thruster(3) or Quad(4). The DT3 and DT4 are your every day daily driver board in average waves waist high up to a a foot overhead. Slightly wider outline allows you to ride it shorter and makes it an easier paddle to catch waves early. This is the cousin of the RTX.

Take the paddle-ability and speed of a Mini Simmons but the high performance of your modern fish and you've got the Variant. Step deck, winged tail, and speed dialer fins. EPS/Resin-X. You need to try this... and you can. Good up to chest high of more if the waves are mushy. Can catch even the slightest bump. This board is available for demo. 5'6" x 21" x 2 1/2" should float 200lbs without a problem and super fun in small waves if you weigh less. This is your new long board alternative.

The Variant in Resin-X EPS

New speed dialer "variant" for mushy waves under waist high. Single fin if you want to replace your longboard with something shorter. Speed dialer if you want surf small waves like a skateboard. Shaped from Marko EPS and glassed with Resin-X and Aerialite 4/4 S-cloth deck and 4 S-cloth bottom. The board goes insane in the small stuff with the speed dialers. Art work is a combo of airbrush and brush work on the blank and paint pens on the hot coat.

This is the third installment in my shout-out to other shapers who have been super helpful to me.

If you are looking for a durable surfboard with a high strength to weight ratio and amazing flex response, look no further than Coil. Their proprietary epoxy vacuum bag tech creates durable boards that are light weight and have a super lively feel in the water. The best part is that they are located on the East Coast in Florida and all the boards are hand shaped and glassed here in the USA. Mike Daniel is one of two shapers at Coil. I've had two custom shaped Coils from Mike and both are absolutely amazing boards. I concentrate on shaping groveler shapes (fish and small wave variants). I trust Mike with my boards for critical waves. I have a 6'1" shortboard that is a hybrid of their Qualifier and Widerboard models and a 6'5" Step-up custom. Mike is an amazing shaper to work with and he will take his time to get all the info he needs to make a board that meets your custom needs. On top of that, Mike has been extremely helpful providing verbal coaching and suggestions on my shaping and I can't thank him enough for going out of his way to help me. 6'8" Fish for Joe

Here's Joe's new 6'8" fish with cool airbrush fade racing stripe down the center. Hopefully some swell sticks around for Memorial Day weekend and he can kick the tires.

Eastcoastsurfer.com is the official NJ surf report of Gallery Surfboards. Professor Sak provides what I call, the "thinking surfer's forecast". He presents you the forecast scenario with it's possibilities, gives you the likely outcome, but also shows you what to watch for so that you can make your own educated decisions on where and when to attack, based on our rapidly changing weather patterns. The professor honed his prognosticating skills down on the Gulf Coast where their window of opportunity is even shorter and more fragile than ours. Those of you who don't want to think and don't want to be prepared can go check Surflie. I'll follow the professor to score the best conditions possible.

If you see me out in the water, chances are the professor is nearby, he's not only my forecaster of choice, but also my best surf buddy and part of the Gallery Crew. The first sequence below is the Professor ripping on his Mike Daniel Coil. In the second sequence, he's tearing up some marginal surf on a Gallery RTQ (round tail quad).

I think it says a lot about the talents of a shaper when another shaper rides his boards. The less experienced "backyard" guys like myself will usually keep a few boards around from the other shapers for which they have the utmost respect. Marlin falls into that category for me. His California Quad model is the most responsive board I have ever ridden. Marlin designs and personally hand crafts the entire package from fins to foam to fiberglass to all work in perfect harmony. Watercolor Flex Fin Quad

I wanted to try something new, so I broke out the watercolors and painted on the foam for this board. US Blanks PU foam and aerialite epoxy resin with s-cloth. I only used 1 full layer of 4oz S to glass on the fins and 1 half patch of 4oz, giving the fin tips almost a flex-fin type feel. This one is available for sale. Give me a ring if interested.

Anthony picked up his custom 6'1" diamond tail quad-vertible. Stoked! Of course when you get a new board there's always a flat spell, so you can all blame him for the lack of waves. He's a big guy so we hid some volume in there, pulled out the nose and added some width to make the average days a bit more epic.
